Mr. Ganiyu Elekuru’s legacy

When this graphic first surfaced a few hours ago, the first person who came to mind was Mr. Ganiyu Elekuru (alias Baba Eleran), the former chairman of the IICC Shooting Stars Supporters Club.

The survival and success of any football club hinge significantly on the goodwill of the community it represents. Supporters clubs are often the embodiment of this goodwill, channeling passion and loyalty into tangible benefits for the team.

Throughout history, numerous influential figures have silently supported our beloved club – from Chief Ogunsola to Engrs. Asuni and Akin Taiwo, and the late Prof. Lekan Are. These individuals, armed with resources, influence, and financial backing, have stepped in whenever the club needed a lifeline.

Mr. Ganiyu Elekuru, a stalwart since the club’s early days, spearheaded a different kind of movement – one rooted in grassroots mobilization. He led the formation of a dedicated supporters club, fostering unity and financial contributions among members. This enabled them to travel at their own expense for away matches and provide essential support during home games – an effort now mirrored by platforms like 3scfanstv.

Supporters clubs play a crucial role in amplifying the club’s media presence, energizing fans, and creating a vibrant atmosphere that fuels team morale. However, their role must always reflect a commitment to the club’s growth, not dependency. Supporters clubs should be pillars of strength, not liabilities. Their purpose is to draw more support for the club, enhance its public image, and contribute positively, not drain resources or complicate operations.

Perhaps this graphic is a subtle tribute to Mr. Ganiyu Elekuru’s legacy – or maybe it’s simply wishful thinking. Either way, it’s a reminder that true supporters lead by giving, not taking.
